Maybe you missed it, but I'm going to repeat it so you have no excuse. Do. Not. Use. The. Scale.
Ah bupbupbup. NO. Put it away. Now!
Now you're thinking, wait... what? Did she {really} just say don't use the scale??
Uhm, yes. That is exactly what I said. I've said it before and it needs to be repeated.
What do you mean you don't understand. Just stop yourself, right now. Re-read everything I just wrote, title and all and let me know when you're back ok?
OK, now that you've got it and it's drilled into your brain. Do NOT use the flipping scale!
I guess maybe I should tell you why?
Here's the problem with the scale, and our society. We put so much importance on a number that has little meaning. It doesn't tell you if you're healthy. It doesn't tell you if you're strong. It doesn't tell you if you've gained endurance.
People tell you that you need to be within a certain range of weight for your height to be {healthy} or that your BMI needs to be less than whatever number it is that it should be less than {see how much I care, that's how much YOU should care}. In all reality those numbers are helpful, but should not be the be all and end all of your life. If you live and die by the scale alone you will certainly die by it.
Your hopes and dreams will go right out of the window. You'll get frustrated and want to give up, you'll say, "it's OK to have this ice cream, I already gained 2 lbs back anyways"
You cannot do this to yourself.
There are plenty of people in this world who are a "healthy" weight but have more plaque buildup than people twice their size. Those same people are what we call skinny fat. There is nothing {wrong} with skinny fat if you are happy, I guess. However, there is so much progress that can be made; just like with someone overweight.
Everyone on this earth is different. Some things work for some people and other things don't. The problem we face is that if someone is "overweight" they are judged that they cannot accomplish things. They cannot run a mile or lift a significant amount of weight, or become more fit. I say fit instead of skinny because I'd rather be fit and {strong} than skinny and fat.
Ya'll wanna look good with the clothes off, not just on. Someday I will be proud to run in booty shorts and a sports bra.
OK back on topic.
The truth is, I weigh 243 pounds and can run a mile. I can leg press and bench press my heart out {albeit not like I used to since I haven't done that in a while}. I can play sports, just like I did at 300 pounds. All of my {measurable} levels are in an amazing range. Except for my weight. My good and bad cholesterol rocks, my blood pressure is awesome, and so are my triglycerides. As a human my body functions and does fairly well; however, I am not happy.
The scale. does. not. matter. No matter what your size is you can have varying degrees of fitness. Your goal should be to be {healthy}. Read it again, let it seep in. {healthy}. There are plenty of people who lose boat loads {maybe not a real boat} of weight by not eating or binging {note i spent a fair amount of time making sure that's how it is spelled because it does not look right}. Or maybe they've always been skinny but drink their weight in beer. Fine, if that's what you want to do go right ahead.
But if you're here... still reading. Probably annoyed that {today} I decided I should write something. Then that isn't you. You want to be fit, you want to feel great. You don't want to settle for less than your body deserves. It {is} your home and all for the rest of your life.
The scale will not and should not be the be all and end all of your day.
The important thing is {progress}
PROGRESS
If the scale shows you lost a few pounds. {GREAT}
If you've busted your A*# and done your program every single day, dripped sweat, cursed at your trainer and gave it your all. You've eaten well and your scale says the same. gosh. dang. thing it said the last time you stepped your fat arse on it. WHO. THE. F. CARES. You know you did the work. You fought tooth and nail to make it through the week.
STOP.
Do NOT focus on the scale. Focus on the fact that you're hitting harder, you're sweating more, you're challenged, you ate well, you have better form or can do all of the reps. But good LORD if I hear you are focusing on that DAMN scale I will break that thing.
Remember how I told you I lost 15.5" in 19 days? Yea, my scale says the same thing it did on that day. I haven't remeasured myself yet but I don't give a F. The scale can shove it. I KNOW I am improving and getting better. At almost 3 weeks into Les Mills Combat I can see that my stomach is getting smaller. I can see that my thighs and arms are getting thinner. I can FEEL the higher intensity of my workouts and my muscles are screaming at me. Yes I've done some of the workouts quite a few times, and the movements get easier, but I still challenge myself.
I don't need a scale to tell me I'm not going back to where I was almost 3 weeks ago. I don't care what it says. And neither should you. Focus on how you feel, stick to the program and eat healthy and clean. Yes I cheated but I got back on track and so can you. Push PLAY. Be EXCITED to workout.
I never thought I could be {EXCITED} to push play. I sit at work all day {still getting my work done mind you} and think about how excited I am to come home and workout. I've been sick a few times, made up the workout. Showed someone the workout by bringing it to them and doing it with them. Came home did it again. I challenged my body. I worked out on my {rest} day because I {WANTED} to workout.
I can't explain the high, or why it is the way it is. Something about endorphins ;)
{If you're not excited to workout everyday, you're probably doing it wrong}
My point is, after all of this rambling. That {hopefully} you can feel my excitement, and you start realizing that the scale is {just a number}. It can be helpful but you should NOT. EVER. Let it ruin your progress. If it's that much of a {debbie downer} in your life then please just get rid of it and invest in a tape measure.
Measuring is time consuming so you'll only do it one time every 1-1.5 weeks. Promise?

Les Mills Combat: Combat 60 Extreme Cardio Fighter
Today was my beginning to week 3 of Les Mills Combat. I missed yesterday because I was sick. {boo hoo}
I swear these trainers are insane. At least until you catch onto what they are doing, then they flippin rock! There were some tricky steps in there that I had difficulty with, but eventually they made sense and I know next round I'll get 'em. Luckily the whole workout wasn't all new, the {moves} are basically the same, they just change up their order or intensity. It's actually really fun.
I can still feel the burn and I'm curious if I'll be able to crawl out of bed tomorrow. I had added 3lbs of weights to some weighted gloves {non-beachbody} but didn't really like their feeling when I was punching. I'm guessing that isn't what they are made for, so I swapped them out mid-workout for the {real} Les Mills Combat gloves which feel SO much better.
Overall I liked this workout, it didn't feel like a whole hour. It seemed to fly by which is a nice change ;)

Doubling Up: Combat 45 // Combat 30
I'm 2 weeks into Les Mills Combat and honestly I feel the best I ever have. I'm not sure if someone put some {ridiculously happy pills} into my food or WHAT!
All week I've been {excited} to work out. I'm only 2 weeks in and I can see remarkable improvement in the way my body functions in my workout. I've also noticed that the videos I've been doing have gotten easier. So today I decided I needed to {double up}
What does that mean, you say?
{Doubling Up} means I worked out TWICE today. You read that right. After 45 minutes of Power Kata I still had the energy to rock out Kick Start. That's an hour and fifteen glorious minutes of hell on earth. It seriously kicked my butt, and I'm glad I did it. After Power Kata I could tell that I was not going to be sore tomorrow. Ok maybe I would have been just a little, but I {knew} my body could handle more. I went back to the menu and hit play. again.
If a 243 pound female who has been working out for a whole two weeks can hit play twice, you have {no excuse} not to hit play at least ONCE.
Stay with the Fight!

Les Mills Combat: Combat 30 Kick Start Progress
Tonight I did another round of Combat 30 Kick Start, it was absolutely {amazing}!
I can feel myself pushing harder and really challenging my body. I can tell I'm getting better with kicking and I'm throwing harder punches. Definitely worked up a sweat and can't wait to do it again!
All day all I kept thinking about was how much I couldn't wait to go home. Not because I don't like my job, I do. But because I just enjoy working out now. I think I've said it before, but it can be repeated. I think I found {my program}.
I love that I'm not even done with week 2 and I'm seeing {progress}. Not only in my measurements {15.5" in 19 days} but in my energy and my ability to fluidly move through the workout.
I absolutely, cannot wait to wake up tomorrow and do another workout! Since I did Combat 30 Kick Start today I will probably do Combat 45 Power Kata tomorrow to change it up. Next week we start adding in new workouts, Combat 60 should definitely be a new challenge but I'm absolutely ready for it.
I'm going to try going to bed earlier and waking up early to complete my workouts. I already fall asleep around 9 yet always hit snooze at 6 am. I hope in time I'm able to stick to an am workout but I also think I'd have less intensity since my roommates would be asleep. Choices, Choices, Choices. Evening is better than never.
Did YOU push play today?

Les Mills Combat Update
It's been a few days since I posted so I thought I would do an update. I haven't seen the scale budge much, been floating around 243 for the last week. It's been pretty frustrating.
I've managed to do all the workouts so far. Les Mills has been AMAZING, I LOVE the workouts themselves, but my body does have difficulty with floor work {think push-ups, burpees, combos, etc}. I think because of this, until I'm in a position where my elbow can handle more stress, I'm going to avoid the HIIT workouts. On those days I may replace the workout with Combat 45 or 60, I'm not really sure yet.
But back to what i was originally blabbing about. I have been frustrated that I haven't seen the scale move. Let's be honest, most people gauge their progress by their weight. I wasn't happy with that so I decided to attempt to measure myself. It's a little harder on your own but it wasn't horrible. I didn't pull the measuring tape tight so you can't say I {cheated} because well, I didn't.
Since January 5th {19 whole days ago}, I've lost 15.5" all over my body. 15.5!
I still really can't explain the whole scale thing, or why my clothes {seem} to fit the same way they did. Apparently mother nature is screwing with my head, or elves are sewing my clothes smaller for me. I'm not sure which one. I know muscle is great and all, but maybe it could like.... go away until I'm skinny...
JUST KIDDING
Today was rest day, back at it again tomorrow! Don't forget to get your Combat on!

Les Mills Combat: Combat 45 Power Kata
Whew! That was a long one but SO worth it.
This morning I was feeling stiff from HIIT 1 and was wishing I could have worked from my bed instead of going in to work. Alas I had to head in and sit all day. Anytime I got up I thought I was going to die. OK so I am exaggerating =)
I was nervous to push play again. Obviously I'm overweight and while I really, really, REALLY want to follow the program, I was concerned I might hurt myself. {awesome run on sentence!}
I decided that after watching Keeping up with the Kardashians I needed to purge my soul. I popped in Les Mills Combat 45 Power Kata and decided I'd at least give it a try. Trying is better than nothing... riiiiiight?!
Turns out I LOVED it and it might honestly be my favorite. It's like Combat 30 Kick Start but {obviously} longer. I loved Kick Start because I was able to keep up with the movements and I understood what they were doing. My body felt great after it. With 45 there were extra reps and a few new moves. I'm still not that great at kicking behind me, but I tried and I KNOW I will get better {because I'm not stopping}.
Overall it was a great cardio workout, If you keep your abs tight it's great for that as well. I'm sure I will be sore tomorrow, but tomorrow is {rest day} WOO HOO.
Also, side note... My legs are NOT killing me right now. I think the key is when you push yourself and you know you're sore you can still workout. It's about warming up the muscles and stretching them {this set of stretches was really relaxing}. It helps the muscles recover and you can sleep better at night knowing you can walk in the morning!

Les Mills Combat: Power HIIT 1
Day 2 of Les Mills Combat is Power HIIT 1. I can tell you right now I'm going to be crawling out of bed tomorrow. I'll be surprised if I can stand.
I had some difficulty with burpees and mountain climbers as I have a bad elbow {incorrectly healed tendon, YAY} BUT I did what you're supposed to do, I kept moving and working the areas they were working. I did a LOT more squats and tried to put my butt to the floor. I'm not so good at that but I'm better at that than burpees!
I can't say this was my favorite workout, but that's probably because I didn't push myself as hard as I did the first day. I DID work up a sweat though so that's a plus!

Les Mills Combat: Combat 30 Kick Start
Kicked my a*#!
If you follow BeachBody, you know that they came out with an awesome new program called Les Mills Combat. If you don't follow BeachBody then, Hi and welcome to my blog HAHA.
Les Mills Combat is a mixed martial arts-inspired body transformation program. It uses dynamic martial arts-inspired training with High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) to push your body far beyond what it's done before.
Personally I LOVE this program so far because I'm able to keep up with what the trainers are doing. It's ok to fall a little behind, but the moves actually make sense and flow together. At the same time it really pushes you to work up a sweat. Maybe even a swear or two. I hadn't worked out in a really long time but I was able to complete the workout, to the very end. Every. Single. Move. My muscles felt GREAT afterwards and I knew I challenged myself. Yet I wasn't curled up in a ball sucking my thumb on the floor.
I had a few choice words for the trainers during parts of the workout but I sucked it up and did it. I won't lie that I had difficulty with the kicking. It's not really my forte. But I'm getting BETTER and that's what it is about. TRYING.
Overall I'm EXCITED for the next 60 days. Goal: Hit 200lbs
Mission Accepted.
