Sometimes The Scale Doesn't Matter

Sometimes you try really hard and nothing seems to change. You push, you pull, you stomp your feet and you're left standing several steps from where you were just a moment ago. No matter how hard you try you can't seem to reach that goal. Weight loss is like dragging a huge boulder down a never ending road to no where. Except slowly, the boulder becomes a smaller boulder, then a rock and eventually a pebble; and then no where becomes exactly where you want to be.

Sometimes you can become discouraged because you aren't paying attention to what really matters. Does the number on a scale TRULY matter? We all know that muscle is heavier by volume than fat. So to truly measure weight loss you cannot only read a scale. I prefer to use the way my clothes fit as a good indicator, some people measure their arms, legs, stomach, thighs, etc. but which ever way you do it make sure you are consistent.

Today when I weighed in at 265.8 I was discouraged. I had gone for a 3.2 mile walk on Tuesday with my dog Lilly not to mention doing some kettlebell work on wednesday. Thursday I started to mow the lawn (ran out of gas....sadness.) and today i'll probably go home and hit up the kettlebells again. I guess my point is I'm disappointed that even though I've worked harder this week, I've lost the least amount of weight since I started again, and gosh darn it i am SO close to being down 25 lbs =(

After being slightly disappointed Lilly was kind enough to remind me that, "Yes Mom, it's Friday and you do have to go to work. Can you let me out first?!" As I got dressed for work I realized that my pants are starting to fit even looser than they were last week. This pair of jeans being the ones I bought 2 weeks ago because all of my other jeans were too big after my first week on Diet Magic. Looks like I need to go shopping again!

Since I move in 14 days I'm making a list of things I'm going to need, and I've decided that having a full length mirror might be a fantastic idea. As I passed by the one in our dining room (yes weird place for a full length mirror I know), I realized that I even look thinner from the side. So obviously sometimes the scale can be wrong. Wrong in the sense that I didn't just lose 1.9 lbs, I had to have gained some more muscle. Even my thighs look thinner.

Sometimes you need to keep perspective. That boulder you're dragging may not break apart as fast as you'd like. As long as you realize everyone is different and that moving at your own pace is OK it doesn't matter how long it takes, but that you stay determined to reach your goal and keep pushing ahead.

Go Ahead, Push, Pull, Stomp Your Feet and Scream at the Top of Your Lungs. It'll all be worth it!
