Yesterday was pay day and my fridge wanted some love, so I went down to Cub Foods to stock up. Since I'm trying to go Paleo I had done some poking around about what to get. I found some shopping lists and core foods from Robb Wolf and headed off on what I hoped would be a successful shopping trip.
This is normally what happens. I grab a cart and go down every aisle. I normally grab things that are easy to make in large quantities so I don't have to cook ALL the time. Mac n Cheese, Viola Meals, Sandwich materials, Cereal, Milk, Pizza, etc. Can you see the pattern? Every single thing I listed has some form of carbs in it.
With the Paleo plan you want to avoid carbs for many reasons. I wont get into that hear, Robb Wolf does an amazing job of explaining everything. So I literally had to erase everything I knew about food.
I felt so overwhelmed when I walked into the store. Every aisle felt like it was a death trap waiting for me. I felt like no matter what I did I'd never find these items that were good for me.
I've narrowed everything down to four aisles. The frozen veggie aisle, The meat aisle, Fresh veggies and the spices aisle.
Since I'm all about saving money, frozen veggies work best for my budget. I can buy in bulk but still have good foods. From there I picked up broccoli, string beans and cauliflower. The meat aisle has everything from chicken and turkey to beef and fish. I loaded up on boneless/skinless chicken breast and realized that I also have sausage at home, which i THINK is ok. Still not sure. I picked up some organic carrots in the fresh veggies area and several different spices for the chicken so I'm not always having the same thing. I also happened to grab lettuce so I can make some salads for work. I feel like I'll eventually get bored with the salads. But there are so many different options for Paleo, I feel like once I understand what I can get and make I'll have more fun with it. For now, just the basics.
The one downside is the spice aisle, is also the BAKING aisle. I. Love. Baking. I also love sweets. Avoiding that part of the aisle is going to be hard. But I can do it.
All in all I hope I made the right decisions about Paleo. I know what I got is healthy so even if it isn't 100% Paleo it would be better than what I've BEEN eating =)
