Fat Is My Enemy

Now that I'm moving I've decided that a balanced diet really needs to be established. I'll have plenty of space in my fridge to stock up on whatever food I need, and a whole kitchen to cook my heart out.

I find it very difficult to change my diet because I LOVE food. I'm a picky eater so I don't really like trying new things, but the things I do like, probably aren't very good for me... and I probably eat to much of them  =(

I've decided to make a few changes not only in the FOODS I eat, but also in HOW MUCH I eat. I'm going to use different "diets" all combined into one and also keep a Food Journal. I know I think I'm busy but if Carrie Underwood has the time to log every meal she has I'm sure I do as well.

So some of the changes I'm looking are the following:

  • 5-6 small meals per day (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, 2 snacks...maybe 3).
  • Journaling all the meals I eat.
  • Eating out only ONCE per month, this will probably be the hardest to stick to. I LOVE going out to eat! It's so much easier than having to cook anything yourself.
  • Lowering the amount of Carbohydrates I consume. I'll explain this a little later.
  • Drinking 2 - 3 Liters of water, that's 8 - 12 cups per day. I'm using Liters because I have a FIJI water bottle that is a Liter, makes it a lot easier to measure if I just use 2 to 3 per day =)
Everyone knows that your body needs to be fueled to keep your energy and metabolism up, so the 5 - 6 small meals makes sense. I think a lot of people just don't realize how much they are eating when they have those "small" meals. I'm hoping that by paying attention to calories and writing down everything I eat, I can ensure those small meals really are small meals. Not just large meals hidden by a lot of lettuce.

As for eating out too often, Jimmy Johns and Chipotle are my weakness. I have no clue why, they just are. I've gotten bored with them, drove around looking for something else and still walked in the restaurant. That's pretty sad, I didn't even want it but it was SO convenient that I got it anyways =(

Our bodies not only run on food but water. If we use something we need to replenish it. The minimum amount of water a person should drink is 8 cups per day, but if you're exercising or in the heat your body will use more. In turn you should drink more. This is the same with vitamins. Back in the day there was a minimum recommendation and now we have percent daily values. Essentially most people now believe they shouldn't intake more than 100% of the Daily Value, but that amount is actually what was once the minimum. If you saturate your body with the nutrients it needs it will expel the excess. I'd rather drink the 2 - 3 liters and know my body is fueled and I'm full, than not drink enough water and over eat. My mom always told me, if you're hungry and you just ate, you aren't really hungry, your body is just thirsty. Go Drink Some Water.

Now on to the lowering of Carbs.

I'm not very imaginative when it comes to food outside of what I currently eat. See Above. And obviously what I'm eating isn't working. So I decided to do a little research about what i SHOULD be eating and how my body type effects how food is used and how I burn fat. I discovered there are three basic body types. Well not really "discovered" because I already knew, but I didn't know how that should impact my diet.

These are called Somatotypes. They are Ectomorph, Mesomorph and Endomorph.

The Ectomorph body type has difficulty building music. The person is typically tall and thin with a light build.

The Mesomorph is what everyone wishes they had. They easily gain muscle and lose fat, are V-Shaped and have a muscular build. Ahhh the good life!

The Endomorph gains weight very easily. They are typically pear shaped and carry excess fat. They also gain weight easily. I sadly fall into this category (but if I didn't I wouldn't be writing this now would I?)

Endomorph body types are genetically prone to store fat due to a slow metabolism. Even in a caloric deficit, fat will reduce at a very slow rate. Which could explain why even when I've worked out for hours on end before I was still heavy. Endomorphs are also more sensitive to Carbs than the other body types, that would explain why a piece of pizza sticks to my thighs and my sister can eat anything in the world and be skinny. Since my body is more sensitive to carbs, if I eat too many it goes straight to fat. Fat is my enemy.

Your body type isn't the be all and end all, HOWEVER it can very well help determine the type of diet that would work best. My initial thought was I'll just cut back on what i eat and stop eating out. But if I continue to eat pastas and breads I can spend 4 hours in the gym and not lose it. But if eaten in moderation I should be able to burn off the few carbs I do consume. Oh and did I mention the Diet Magic helps increase metabolism? Well it does!

I still need to learn to give myself variety and have some sort of plan food wise. Since I'm so picky it may take a while but eventually maybe I'll enjoy eating at home instead of going out. I hope.
